The Bleach Walk — Innishannon’s Hidden Riverside Gem
April 6, 2026 | by innishannon
An 800-metre riverside walk with 300 years of history beneath your feet — and it is right on the edge of the village.
Every community needs a place to breathe. In Innishannon, that place is The Bleach — a stretch of riverside land on the banks of the River Bandon that has been at the heart of village life for centuries, and remains so today.
What Is “The Bleach”?
The name dates to the 18th century, when Innishannon was home to a thriving linen bleaching industry established by landowner Thomas Adderley. Linens produced at the local mill were brought to this flat, sunny riverbank to be spread out and naturally bleached in the sun — a laborious but essential part of the linen-making process. The area became known simply as “The Bleach”, and the name has stuck across the centuries.
Today, The Bleach is home to the Valley Rovers GAA grounds and the community playground — but its real heart is the 800-metre riverside walk that runs along the banks of the Bandon, offering a peaceful, beautiful stroll just moments from the village centre.
The Walk
The Bleach Walk is flat, well-maintained, and accessible to virtually everyone — from young children in buggies to older walkers. The path follows the gentle curves of the River Bandon, with views across the water to the trees and fields on the far bank. In spring and summer, the river glitters in the sunlight and the banks are alive with wildflowers. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn gold. In winter, the walk has a quiet, stripped-back beauty all of its own.
For local residents, The Bleach Walk is a daily ritual — a place to clear the head, have a chat, let the dog run, or simply spend twenty minutes with the river before the day begins. For visitors, it is a lovely addition to a day in Innishannon, easily combined with the heritage trail and a stop at Dromkeen Wood.
The Playground
Alongside the walk, the Valley Rovers community playground (Clós Súgartha Inis Eonáin) provides excellent play equipment for a range of ages. It is a genuine community asset, generously maintained by Valley Rovers GAA, and it makes The Bleach a perfect family destination.
